Former Aston Villa manager Keith Wyness has vowed that the club’s financial “problems” will be “answered right there and then” if Champions League status is achieved.
Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was CEO at Villa Park from 2016 to 2018 and now runs a football consultancy that advises elite clubs, suggested the Midlands giants are “in a marginal situation” as the Premier League cracks down on financial breaches.
Aston Villa released its end-of-year financial results earlier this month (4 March), revealing an overall loss of about £120 million after tax for the 2022-23 season.
The Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) dictate that top-flight clubs cannot exceed £105 million in losses over three years, with violations resulting in points deductions or financial penalties.
Everton and Nottingham Forest have already received six and four-point fines this season for violating PSR.
Wyness believes that qualifying for the Champions League will solve Aston Villa’s FFP issues.
However, Aston Villa are now fourth in the Premier League and are in a good position to qualify for the Champions League, which would offer a significant boost to the club’s finances.
