The San Francisco 49ers are “planning” for a major “problem” at quarterback coming up shortly. The 49ers had gotten a deal with Brock Purdy the previous two years.
Purdy, the final choice in the 2022 NFL Draft, has signed a four-year contract worth $3.7 million. His near-MVP-level performance last season, along with a low deal, allowed the 49ers to spend significantly on other positions and nearly win the Super Bowl. However, the coach that is Purdy’s deal is going to turn into a pumpkin next year when the quarterback becomes eligible for a new contract.
According to Cam Inman of the Mercury News, 49ers CEO Jed York discussed Purdy’s future with the organization. He stated that the front office is planning how to extend Purdy.
These checks will have a lot of zeros connected. York claimed Purdy will seek for a contract that no other quarterback has asked for, and he expects it to be worth more than $40 million per year. York described the scenario as a “good problem” for the 49ers since it indicates they have a good franchise quarterback.
“It’s a good problem when your quarterback is one of the highest-paid players on your team and in the league,” York told Bay Area reporters Tuesday during the NFL’s annual owners meetings in Orlando, Fla.
However, once Purdy signs the extension, the 49ers will face problems with his contract. The 49ers are paying hefty money to players in premium and luxury positions, which has helped Purdy and the team win two NFC Championship games in straight.
The 49ers hope to keep wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel on the same roster. The 49ers feel Aiyuk helps Purdy become a better quarterback. Can they afford him, Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams, Charvarius Ward, or Nick Bosa?
According to Over The Cap, the 49ers will begin the 2025 offseason with over $24 million in the red. That is before Purdy’s possible extension and without Aiyuk on the roster.
When Purdy signs his extension, the 49ers will rely on him to be the reason the club wins games.
